If you have read Tolle or De Mello you will soon realise that I am not about to reveal anything new but perhaps attempt to explain it in a way that is easier to understand and more accessible.
Achieving happiness is surprisingly simple but can be incredibly difficult, it all depends on your starting point which we will find shortly.
Optimistically Eckhart Tolle believes that an increasing number of people are becoming self aware in the true sense of the concept. More people are understanding that material wealth is not the path to happiness.
He describes this as the next step in human evolution. We are evolving both physically and mentally all the time as a race but Tolle and many others like him believe if we do not evolve in this way more rapidly we may well destroy ourselves in the near future.

Many of the spiritual leaders who talk about spiritual awareness tend to bang on about ‘understanding’ a great deal.
In my first few readings I had missed what they meant but I went over De Mello’s Awareness again today and this time heard him say it was how to “see people for who they are“. This is not what you think it is!
A man approached a mystic looking for advice on how he might improve his life. He saw the mystic had a small bag and, curious, asked what was inside.
“Have a look” said the mystic and the man rummaged around in the bag. Much to his surprise he found an enormous diamond.
A guru was once attempting to explain to a crowd how human beings react to words, feed on words, live on words, rather than on reality. One of the men stood up and protested; he said, ‘I don’t agree that words have all that much effect on us.’
The guru said, ‘Sit down, you son of a bitch.’ The man went livid with rage and said, ‘You call yourself an enlightened person, a guru, a master, but you ought to be ashamed of yourself.’

We see this around us all the time – people who are unhappy because things have changed. As humans many of us (the majority) cling to the past. The past was always ‘better’.

I went over what is reality and what is illusion in Understanding Reality and Illusion but I was thinking about this issue of how to live in a world that has so much illusion.
First though, if you missed it, the difference. Reality is how things are. Illusion is any label that people put on those things, any human constructs.

For years, when I have dabbled with enlightenment, I heard the kind of story where a person goes to a wise man and asks advice. The wise man’s response goes something like “Who are you that asks the question?” or “First you must know you?”.
My response has always been “Stop dodging the question, saying annoying phrases and get on with being wise!” To me this was all part of the smoke and mirrors that being a ‘wise man’ was.
