“Perhaps you are waiting to hear my laments about ‘how much one suffers’ living with a man like Diego. But I do not believe the bank of the river suffer by letting it run …” – Frida Kahlo
This is a great quote to highlight a common mistake. We often assume another person is unhappy because we view their life through our mentality.
Frida Kahlo was an Mexican artist who married another, Diego Rivera. By all accounts Diego was a difficult man and so many people at the time felt Frida must be ‘suffering’.
Frida did not see it like this, just the same was as you can find a person who lives in the slums that is much happier than a millionaire living in a mansion.
Frida’s point was that you might be married to someone difficult but if you just let that person be, rather than constantly try and mould them into someone else, you do not suffer.
